Black and White with...... Green? really!

Yep thats right!
I cant remember who told me this fun little fact but after doing some research a while ago this is what I found out! I mentioned in my blog earlier that orange may show up better in black and white images than that of pink shades, But did you know that Green tones use to be used as they show up better than red, as the reds can become drained and flattened in the printed image, so green was used in stead of red to create makeup looks

"Green Replaces Red in Make-up for Television
Green lipstick and rouge replace the customary red in make-up designed for actresses appearing in television broadcasts. The television camera, it is explained, does not record the red coloring in the human complexion, leaving the transmitted image flat and unnatural. When green is substituted, however, the lips and cheeks of a performer appear in accurate relation of tones with other facial features as the image is projected on the screen of the receiver. (Modern Mechanics)"

So the next time you look at you old photography in black and white just think the makeup could be green!
What you ya reckon!?

This is also the case in filming and tv, obviously this is not the case with current HD and zoom lenses as they pick up everything, but during the 1930's and 40's the quality was not as clear. however I SHALL be testing this theory out for myself!
I also stumbled across some amazing images of TV makeup for Black and White TV, how the face was contoured to be able to be picked up in the fuzz that was 1930's TV shows! how cool are these, check out the contouring simply stunning!
